Renovation and redesign of the foyers for the Main Hall at TivoliVredenburg
The renovation and redesign of the foyers surrounding the original hall of Muziekcentrum Vredenburg presented a unique challenge. TivoliVredenburg’s brief was clear: strengthen the connection with the historic city center and Vredenburgplein, and improve the relationship between the interior and exterior. The result is an inviting environment that respects the building's historical value while exuding a warm, contemporary feel.
This foyer renovation and redesign project required a careful balancing act between Hertzberger’s architectural heritage and modern-day requirements. His iconic design—which emphasizes openness and transparency—served as the starting point for our approach. Our goal was not merely to restore the building’s aesthetic and functional qualities, but to enhance them in a contemporary way.
Working closely with AHH (Herman Hertzberger’s firm), we integrated modern building systems and lighting. The ceilings were replaced and fitted with lighting that contributes to the foyer experience both functionally and aesthetically. Five new hospitality bars were incorporated into the original structure.
Inspired by Herman Hertzberger’s architecture and the artworks that have given the foyers a distinctive identity since 1979, a contemporary *Gesamtkunstwerk*—a total work of art—has emerged, in which architecture, art, and textiles blend seamlessly. Complemented by new transparent facades facing Vredenburgplein, the foyers now create an open, light-filled, and contemporary impression that offers visitors a truly special welcome.
The renovation of the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg foyers has resulted in a welcoming space that is ready for the future. It is a tribute to Herman Hertzberger’s original vision and, at the same time, an invitation to the visitor to experience the building in a new way.
