DUM furniture contributes to BREEAM certification

Architects working on BREEAM-certified projects will find that DUM furniture directly supports multiple credit categories, through its material choice, certified sourcing and low-emission finishes.

MAT 01 — Materials: low environmental impact Solid beech wood is a biobased, renewable material with a low carbon footprint. As trees grow, they absorb and store CO₂, every m³ of wood locks in approximately 1,000 kg of CO₂. Specifying wood-based furniture over high-energy materials such as steel or aluminium actively reduces the embodied carbon of a building's interior fit-out, contributing to BREEAM credits for low lifecycle impact.

MAT 03 — Responsible sourcing BREEAM requires that timber products originate from legally and sustainably managed sources. FSC certification is the recognised gold standard and constitutes full proof of responsible forest management, traceability and social accountability throughout the supply chain. 100% FSC or FSC Mix timber delivers maximum points within BREEAM's responsible sourcing criteria. HEA 02 — Indoor air quality DUM's water-based lacquers and stains have extremely low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions, ten times lower than conventional solvent-based lacquers, and contain no heavy metals. This directly supports BREEAM credits for healthy indoor environments. Beyond certification: research from Japan, Finland, Canada and Austria confirms that natural wood in interiors reduces stress, improves cognitive function and enhances the wellbeing of the people who live and work there.
